”Dolsot bibimbap” designated as Chinese heritage… Seo Gyeong-deok “”””Invading our culture in the name of ethnic Koreans””””

Controversy has arisen after it became known belatedly that Dolsot Bibimbap, a traditional Korean food, was designated as an intangible cultural heritage in China’s Jilin Province three years ago.

In this item, the Dolsot Bibimbap recipe was included under the category of ‘Korean Dolsot Bibimbap Making Art (Cooking Technique)’, a fact that became known through recent media reports.

Seo Gyeong-deok, a professor at Sungshin Women’s University, posted on Facebook today (20th), “I immediately searched for Dolsot bibimbap in the Baidu encyclopedia, and there was an explanation that it was a ‘Korean-Chinese unique rice dish.'”

Professor Seo said, “The first paragraph of the Baidu Encyclopedia explains, ‘Stone pot bibimbap is a rice dish unique to the Korean people, not only on the Korean Peninsula but also in Heilongjiang, Jilin, and Liaoning in northeastern China.’”

He then pointed out, “When I searched two years ago, the word ‘Chosunjok’ was not included, but the inclusion of ‘Chosunjok’ does not seem to be unrelated to its inclusion in the list of intangible cultural heritage of Jilin Province.”

The National Heritage Administration said, “We will monitor the status of overseas intangible cultural heritage designation related to our traditional culture,” and added, “If necessary, we will also actively pursue preemptive measures for priority listing on UNESCO’s Intangible Heritage of Humanity.”
